If you are not engaging an agent for this transaction, this is the risk that you will associate yourself with and potentially end up getting into other consequences on top of the possibility of losing your deposit and rental. Otherwise, if you have doubts over the authenticity of this landlord and apartment for rent, you can choose not to proceed with renting this unit and look for others, why proceed with the rental if you have doubts?
