I guess it really depends on your earning power. In general, I'd say go with a HDB first especially if you're starting out so as not to burden yourself too much with mortgage repayment as you build your family, career etc.
However, if your plan is to build a property portfolio (local and/or overseas) within the next few years, a HDB ownership will be restrictive due the 5 years MOP.
