In 2 more years, i will be eligible to buy my own house. i currently staying at a 5-room flat with my parents and im hoping to get my own space. I am also encouraging my parents to downgrade their flat. Is it easy to get 2 units (not necessary to be on the same floor) of the same block?? Whether it be BTO or Resale

It is not easy to get 2 units on the same floor and luck do play a huge part. You can always buy 1 at a time and wait for opportunity when you neighbour sells.

If you’re talking about BTO, getting two separate units in the same block will depend heavily on luck during balloting. Even if both applications are successful, you’ll need to coordinate your selection appointments carefully. Most families don’t manage to secure two units within the same block unless the project has a lot of available flats and both applicants get early queue numbers.

For resale, it’s more flexible. You can target the same block and monitor listings closely, or work with an agent to approach owners directly. Sometimes two units in the same block go up for sale within months apart, so it helps to move fast when you spot one.

Hi,

1) It is important for you to have a serious family discussion over finance.
2) It is true that for your parents will receive profit by selling their current flat because they could have bought it at a lower price.
3) However, they have to comply to the right-sizing policy which is 50% of the cash proceeds have to be use to pay for the next purchase if they are taking a 2nd HDB loan.
4) If they are taking a bank loan, they have to cough out 5% cash for the downpayment, and 20% in cash and/or CPF.
5) You have to ensure they are comfortable with such arrangement if they are buying a resale flat.
6) It is true that you will have a higher priority (Family Care Scheme) when buying 2 BTO flats together. But note that you are eligible for 2 & 3-rm flats only. Your parents might not be comfortable with it since they are living in a 5-rm flat now.
7) Do have a heart-to-heart discussion and if the result is positive, apply for an HFE to understand the loan and grants available for your purchase.

It’s generally quite challenging to get two units in the same block, whether BTO or resale.
• BTO: Units in the same block are usually limited, and allocation is based on a ballot system. Even if your parents apply to downgrade and you apply for your own unit, there’s no guarantee both applications will succeed in the same block.
• Resale: You have more flexibility, but availability is still limited and depends on what’s on the market. You’d need to actively monitor listings and act fast if two suitable units appear.
