I'm in my 20s and just returned to Singapore because of my father's passing. He left me his 6+1+1 rm house in Holland area (mother divorced many years ago, so she was not included in the will). Is it correct that I must dispose of any private property if I were to purchase an HDB? What are the additional fees/taxes I have to pay if I were to buy a private property in Singapore? I also have an apartment overseas, if that matters. Thanks.

Hi Ms Wu, Please take note of the relevant Seller's Stamp Duty for selling the house within 4 years. More information can be found here: http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page04.aspx?id=10200 If you have no existing properties in Singapore, you will only be liable to pay Buyer's Stamp Duty of 3% for your purchase. Additional fees could include the legal fees and service fees for agent. You are right that you will need to dispose your private and overseas residential property within 6 months period of taking possession of your HDB should you decide to purchase a resale HDB. Hi Ms Wu, my condolences to you for your father's passing. It must be a trying period for you at such young age. HDB rules state private property (Local or overseas) must be disposed of within 6 months of obtaining HDB flat. However, there are special cases that I am obliged to assist you in your special circumstances that was not a result of your choice. HDB is obliged to review every special case with valid reasons.
