Depending on your income status, you can opt to apply for HLE. Hunting of flat, understanding the market and choosing something that fit your requirement and budget will be vital.
Secondly, planning ahead for what is to come will help you decide on the location and type of housing.
Lastly, get an agent to assist you along the way so that everything will be hassle-free till the day you collect keys for your ideal unit.

Will be glad to assist. I have worked with first timers couples before, and understand your concerns and plans. You may refer to my client testimonials below. Firstly, you may want to apply for a hdb loan eligibility (HLE) first to determine how much indicative loan hdb can support, so as to narrow down the ideal locality clusters and sizes to look at. Loan depends on your age, income and credit profile and any outstanding loan.

If both are SC 1st timers and your monthly gross household income is 12k & below, you are eligible for hdb loan and 1st timer housing grant of 30k. If you are buying near parents, you can also qualify for proximity housing grant of 20k. These are some basic info that hopefully clears up some of your initial doubts. It is advisable for all buyers to kickstart the whole process by assessing the eligibility to purchase from the HDB schemes to the financial assessment on top of the various grants that you maybe eligible for (am assuming you are looking to stay near parents). If both of these checks have not been done, it is advisable to do so especially for financial aspect (HDB loan or Bank loan) where you will need to streamline the possibility of choices you can work on in order to be more efficient in the whole home search process.
