Each eligible family unit can only own 1 HDB flat. As a married couple is considered as a family unit, both husband and wife can therefore own only 1 HDB flat at any one time, and will need to be listed as a co-owner or occupier in the same flat.

All owners and occupiers listed in the flat may invest in private residential property AFTER the minimum occupation period. However, you must continue living in the flat after the purchase of the private residential property unless you have obtained HDB’s prior approval to rent it out.

Once married, hdb sees you as an married entity and since the lady's hdb is within MOP period, the guy is supposed to be added to the hdb as an essential occupier, which means he has to fulfil the MOP requirements as well. Are you guys able to defer the marriage proceedings?

Within the Minimum Occupation Period of 5 years, from HDB's perspective, the husband and wife will need to stay together and therefore, your partner may not be able to purchase a private property. Once the MOP is met, he will not have any restrictions in purchasing one and will not be subjected to any ABSD.

1. Under HDB rules, **each eligible family unit**—which includes a married couple—**can own only one HDB flat** at any given time. Both spouses must be **co-owners or listed as occupier and owner** of the same flat.

The 5-year Minimum Occupation Period (MOP) generally applies to the owner of the HDB flat before they can sell it or purchase another property. If the 35F owns the flat solely, the MOP applies to her, not her spouse.

For the 35M buying a condo, the MOP on the wife’s HDB doesn’t restrict him personally, but keep in mind that owning multiple properties can affect eligibility for grants, taxes, or loans.

These rules can get complicated depending on your exact situation, so it’s best to check with HDB or a property professional.

Hi,

1) A spouse will be automatically became the core occupier in an HDB flat.
2) The core occupier will have to observe a fresh 5 years MOP from the date listed as an occupier.
3) This means that he is not allowed to buy a condo until 5 yrs later.
4) If he had already bought the condo, it is best to write to the HDB to have an exemption before marry.
