I would agree that there are bad apples in the market but you cannot chop down the whole tree due on one rotten apple, right?

My advice to my clients is:

Always meet your prospective salesperson and understand his or her method of working.
Ask intelligent questions to know if the salesperson is suitable for you and your family.
Never over-commit yourself to the salesperson unless you have done your homework.

I am pretty sure that from the bad experience, one can learn from it and work around it. The ultimate objective is to sell at the best possible price, which is bread and butter issue for fulltime salesperson like me. It'll be good that you shortlist a few salesperson for interview before deciding if you wish to go DIY. I usually believe in partnerships instead of customer-agent rlationship. Trust me, the majority of the salespersons are honest and hardworking professionals. You just need to be selective in choosing the right agent to work for you.
