I have an option to renew my lease for 1 year. In the event the landlord wants to use the property himself, is the option to renew still valid, even though my tenancy agreement does not have the provision that the option is subject to the owner taking back the unit for his own use

If your tenancy agreement states you have the option to renew, then yes you can renew. Especially if does not state "subject to the owner taking back for own use".
