Dear Ms Miller, Before engaging the services of any salesperson (agents as you know it), it is advisable to ensure that he or she has a valid RES license to practise. You can access the public register in CEA website as Raymond has indicated in his reply and check if this salesperson has a valid license or not by keying in their mobile phone number. Salespersons are being regulated here in Singapore therefore we have a need to abide by the rules and regulations as well as ethics prescribed under the Estate Agents Act (a law being passed through parliament). Of course, I do not dare to commit that everyone of us abides by the rules and regulations, otherwise there will not be news report indicating that errant salespersons have been penalised or dealt with. More importantly, if you are uneasy working with any salesperson, you can perhaps choose to work on a non-exclusive basis that at any point of time if you are uncomfortable, you may seek to use another salesperson. More importantly is clarification when you have doubts. For example, I have the practise of explaining the rationale behind certain procedures when it comes to putting in of deposits for a property which one maybe interested in renting or purchasing. Evening Daphne, All legitimate salesperson are registered with CEA. They will be required to attend classes and attain the certification to start working as salesperson. They are also required to attend continuous training sessions to keep them abreast with the current ruling or to recap on topics that might have turn rusty. Lastly, I would be sure that you will be meeting up with the prospective salesperson, who might as assisting you accordingly, prior engaging their services.
