Hi there , Our relocation has been put on hold due to covid 19 and we are asking our rental agent to extend our lease 3-6 mths. He has kindly done twice this year already as our move dates keep changing. How ever this time he is asking us to pay the 1/2 month brokerage fee on our past year of lease quoting he will not charge the owner this? . Our monthly rental is over $3500 and we have not engaged a tenants agent. Am I correct in saying this is for the Owner to pay not the tenant.

Hi Sir
You can double check with the landlord agent if the fees he requested is in regards to your past year rental or the extension you requested. For your past year rental, it is unlikely he will request you for payment as the normal practise is for commission payment to be made once tenancy agreement is signed. It is likely this payment is due to your request of extension and the owner is not willing to bear the brokerage fee just for this 3 to 6 months extension. One way to negotiate this is you can request for 1 year extension instead and see if owner willing to absorb the brokerage fee. Feel free to contact me at 93375051  for further details on this.

Hi Glenn, such issue can be further discussed and negotiated. You may also check with the landlord too as this agent can’t collect commission from both parties.
