Hello, Can anyone confirm with me.
I've give deposit for my rental via bank transfer to the landlord working in Australia. But agent told to give cash to her and reject my cheque. I'm surprise for this arrangement, shouldn't it by cheque or direct to landlord account? And guess what after she collected cash she split the commission on the spot with so call the landlord relative. Is this legal ?
My tenant lease is expiring soon, my landlord will not be present for me to handover so should u ask for an authorize letter from whoever that I'm passing the key to? I'm just afraid the landlord will not return my deposit.

Can someone please advice me.

Hi Mdm,

According to CEA, Agents cannot, and should not handle CASH monies, except if it's for Commission.

In your case, you can insist that you pay by Cheque, issued to Landlord's name. Please get from the agent the ownership proof for the unit too. You want to be sure you're writing the cheque to the rightful owner.

Hi Mdm Sako, yes you could insist not to pay any cash and only by cheque. And of course, it is better for you to see the ownership proof first before you issue any cheque as this is to safeguard yourself.
