Nope, you do not need to pay any fee whether for rent or for sale, when you respond to an ad placed by agents.

Dear sir/madam,
Rightfully you need not pay the salesperson for any contacts done. Nevertheless if you agree to allow the salesperson you have contacted take on in finding other suitable units for you, then service fees is payable. I am recently assisting several clients of mine to locate units for rental and should you be able to disclose more requirements you have I maybe able to contact you for suitable units I come across.
