Construction works on Cross Island Line Pasir Ris station to start in Q4

A $980 million civil contract for the project has been awarded to a joint venture comprising Daewoo Engineering and Construction as well as Dongah Geological Engineering’s Singapore branch.

Construction works for the Pasir Ris MRT interchange station along the Cross Island Line (CRL) are expected to start in Q4 2021, with passenger service slated to commence in 2030, reported Channel News Asia (CNA) citing the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

A $980 million civil contract for the project has been awarded to a joint venture comprising Daewoo Engineering and Construction as well as Dongah Geological Engineering’s Singapore branch.

“This contract covers the design and construction of Pasir Ris interchange station and tunnels, as well as addition and alteration works to the existing Pasir Ris station along the East-West Line (EWL),” said LTA as quoted by CNA.

LTA noted that the two firms have “established track records in providing design-and-build construction services for infrastructure such as rail stations and tunnels locally and abroad”.

In fact, Daewoo Engineering and Construction is working on the construction of the Stevens MRT station and tunnels for the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). The Singapore branch of Dongah Geological Engineering, on the other hand, is involved in the construction of the Great World station and tunnels for TEL.

The CRL’s first phase will span 29km, covering 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill.

More than 100,000 households are expected to benefit from the new stations, with recreational areas like Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Changi Beach Park becoming more accessible by public transport.

LTA shared that commuters could expect travel times between Pasir Ris and Defu industrial estate to be reduced by 20 minutes, bringing it to just 15 minutes. Travel time from Pasir Ris to Ang Mo Kio is also expected to be lowered from one hour to just 25 minutes.

It added that studies on details of the CRL’s subsequent phases are ongoing.

The line will serve existing as well as future developments within Singapore’s western, eastern and northeastern corridors, connecting major hubs such as Punggol Digital District, Jurong Lake District and Changi region.

With almost half of its stations serving as interchanges with other rail lines, the CRL will make it “easier and more convenient for commuters to travel across the rail network”, said LTA.

Once completed, the CRL will be the eighth MRT line of Singapore and the city-state’s longest fully underground line.
