I have a EC Lilydale bought at $525k back in 2009 and currently tenanted. Monthly maint fee is $290. Due to personal reason, i have to move out and stay on my own for long term (say 10yrs). my question is:
1)shld i liquidate the EC and buy a HDB executive apartment for self stay?
2) or shld i stay in my EC?
my concern is the monthly expense between an EC and HDB. subconsciously, i also wish not to miss out on the appreciation of my property price as the surroundings gradually matures and should the govt announce on future mrt lines.
Please advice.

Evening Lily,

Firstly, what will be your new lifestyle be like, due to your personal problem? Will it incur more expenses (staying in rental unit)? How "liquid" will you be?
We are talking about financial planning here hence it would be very unprofessional to give you an direct answer now. All that I can say now is that Lilydale have being appreciating since your purchase in 2009. Nobody can predict what is to happened tomorrow thus it's only wise to take calculated risk.

Do contact me if you need further assistance on working things out.

Thanks

Hi Lily,

This is pretty tricky as it all boils down to your personal lifestyle and commitment. Monetary wise, of course it'll make more economical sense to choose a HDB.

Personally, I do not find a difference in staying in HDB and condo, for a fact that the only difference will be paying monthly maintenance for facilities which I may not fully utilise and this amount of money will be useful for other purposes.

I have been very active in the North to understand that prices here are catching up fast to the rest of the districts therefore, given your situation in my own shoes, I will definitely choose the HDB option, although I'll be tied down with 5years MOP.
