Hi, I have been renting a HDB flat for a year, and I got it through an agent. Now I would like to extend my lease and the landlord has agreed. Is it legally compulsory to hire an agent for the renewal or can I have an agreement just between myself and the landlord? Thank you.

Hi Jess, you need to look at 2 things:

1) Did u pay ur agent commission when he first found the place for you? If u did, u should have signed an agreement w ur agent then. Hence, u need to consider ur legal obligation.

2) If ur agent received commission from the landlord agent when u first found this rented place, whether you would like him to be involved in the lease extension depends on the service he has been giving you. His knowledge and service will benefit you if there are complexities in the tenancy. Read More
