i m currently listed as an occupier in mum and dad HDB but in future ofcource i will plan to get marry and move out. just thinking as an example i mean not example but forseeing future a bit in advance :) so… just wondering, does being an occupier affect my own chances of buying a flat in future ? i meanm i not a not an owner. i only recently found out there is a difference between owner and occupier so now a bit confused that i may have perhaps unknowingly affected my future housing options . is that so?? I'm still very young, but I think this is important information I should know; that's why I am asking on this forum. regards,

**No, you have not ruined or permanently affected your future housing chances.** Being listed as an occupier in your parents’ flat is completely normal for children living at home. However, there are two key rules you must know before buying your own flat later:

---

### 1. You Retain Full First-Timer Buyer Privileges

* **Not an Owner:** Because you are only an occupier, you have zero legal ownership share, no property title, and your CPF has not been used.
* **Clean First-Timer Status:** In the eyes of HDB, you are still a **first-time buyer**. You will qualify for full first-timer BTO balloting priorities and maximum CPF Housing Grants (like the Enhanced CPF Housing Grant) when you marry and apply with your spouse.

---

### 2. The Minimum Occupation Period (MOP) Rule

* While you are not an owner, if you were listed as an **essential occupier** when your parents bought the flat (e.g., helping to form the family nucleus for a specific grant or flat type), you must fulfill the flat’s **Minimum Occupation Period (MOP)**—usually 5 years—before you can apply for your own subsidised flat or be removed from the record.
* If your parents have already completed the flat's MOP, you are free to apply for your own BTO or resale flat whenever you are ready.

---

### 3. You Cannot Be Listed on Two HDB Records Concurrently

* When you successfully apply for a flat with your future partner, your name must be **formally delisted as an occupier** from your parents' flat by the time you collect the keys to your new home.
* HDB rules strictly prohibit any individual from being an owner or occupier in two subsidised public flats simultaneously.

The occupier status should not affect your housing eligibility, priorities, or grant eligibilities for future HDBs.

You should however check if you are listed as an 'essential' occupier, which may have helped your parents qualify for the flat in the first place, or certain grants. If so, then you need to do one extra check on whether you moving out will affect their HDB (such as requiring them to sell, or losing some grants).

Typically there should be no effect, but there are exceptions. I recently came across a case where the daughter moving out would force the mother to sell the flat.

Happy to chat on whatsapp to clarify these things if you need further advise!

Your chances to purchase a HDB will not be affected as an occupier, if we are basing on existing regulations. Hope this clear your doubts.

I have been in the real estate business since 2009, with more than 15 years of experience serving the Singapore real estate market. Check out the EdgeProp featured article on myself recently at https://www.edgeprop.sg/property-news/geryl-lim-leading-landed-real-estate-heart-hustle-and-harmony

I am very active in the residential segment of Singapore real estate market, having transacted hundreds of deals from HDBs to private condominiums and landed properties in Singapore, and have handled many unique cases in sales and purchases as well as rental deals.

Over the years, I have also established a network reaching out to more than 15,900 expatriates, bringing my market presence to both in and outside of Singapore. This has created an additional exposure when I manage my client's portfolios, on top of the conventional on and offline platforms, where other estate agents are relying on. This has allowed me to consistently convert leads into results.

With an evolving market, where change is the only constant, I have also been investing in upgrading of my knowledge and skills sets to improve myself and meet the demands of current and future market.
