You do not need to engage any agents to assist you in realising your real estate needs.

Nevertheless, I am pretty disturbed that you have mentioned that majority of us in this profession are clueless and provide horrible service.

For one, I believe that I have always provided my best regardless if there is exclusive agreement or not. I do keep in touch with my clients via SMS mostly especially during weekdays office hours where most of them maybe engaged at work and will be inconvenient to pick up the call. I believe that the handful of agents you have met maybe in the category you have described, but definitely not majority.
