My wife currently owns a 3-room HDB with her mum as joint tenants, and are planning to sell it to upgrade to a 5-room under her name together with mine (first-timer). Will we be able to purchase under SBF or OBF? What is the process like?

Hi,
First and foremost, you need to make an HFE application, whether it is BTO, SBF or resale. This can be done on the SingPass MyHDBPage app.

Then, wait for the approval. It might take 3 weeks. As BTO normally takes 4 years to build, you got time to wait. If SBF, then it would be faster.

When you are ready to sell your HDB, you can contact an agent to represent you to take care of the sales professionally.

Hi Isyraf,

To qualify under SBF or OBF, your total household monthly income cannot exceed $14k. Their current 3-room must also have met the MOP of 5 years before being eligible to apply. The first step is to apply an HFE letter so to be able to take part in the SBF or OBF exercise.

Do note that SBF or OBF exercise happens only once or twice per year, so it is good to apply the HFE letter ahead. SBF is a bit like BTO balloting process, from applying till key collection it can take at least 1 year or more. For OBF, its a first-come-first serve fastest fingers basis via online application, the key collection may be faster but still will be around 9 months. There is a lot of luck involved because typically SBF is oversubscribed and OBF requires a lot of camping work.
The flats available may not be in the locations you want as well.

You can also consider resale flats. There will be more options in the areas you want, typically more spacious and you may still be eligible for grants.

Hi, appreciate your sharing. Apply HFE to determine the HDB loan follow by cashing out the 3 room before going for 4 room. If BTO, have to await for key collection then start marketing the 3 room.
