My wife bought and lived in her own hdb unit before our marriage under the single scheme. Once married, I was registered as an authorised occupier.

The mop of her hdb unit is not due yet. There are 2 more years left. However, i would like to purchase a condo unit under my own name. I have never own any property before. I have already decided on which area and am ready to purchase.

My question is :
Can I purchase my own condo under my name now? if not, are other ways for me to purchase my own condo now such as removing my name as an authorized occupier?

Hi,

Based on the info shared, it seems like she bought the hdb under her single owner name before marriage, and you are just added in as normal occupier status. It seems possible for you to purchase the private property under your own name , but would suggest to write in to HDB branch to get a written email confirmation before executing any OTP or S&P for the private property.

If you had been added into the flat as the essential occupier, you will also be required to serve the 5-year MOP before you can purchase another property.

You may wish to write in to HDB to confirm your status, before you proceed to take any action for your purchase.

Dear sir,

An authorised occupier differs greatly from an essential occupier. From the sequence of events which you have described, it is likely that you are an authorised occupier instead of essential occupier, however, it is best to ascertain this status with HDB itself.

You will be eligible to purchase a private residential property should you be an authorised occupier for the HDB which you wife had purchased and will not be subjected to the 5 years Minimum Occupation Period.
