Hi,

1) It is dependent on your active income and situation to determine which is a better option.
2) Needs and wants can be separate, most of the situation is time and money issues.
3) Once you are able to prioritize your needs and wants you will be able to decide what is the best solution.
4) Private has a better appreciation than the HDB. The gain also became more significant in absolute dollars.
5) HDB flat is mainly for stay and can forget about gain. Private can look for gain but need to pay more to gain.
6) Since you are still young, I would encourage you to "chiong" now rather than to slow down your pace and settle for less.

Honestly, if your combined income runs into 5 figures, my advice would be to buy an EC. Then, after 5 years MOP, EC's are privatised. At this juncture, you can decouple (remove one name from the property) and one of you can then buy a 2nd private property for passive income. This way, you save on 12%ABSD on your 2nd property. This is what most professionals are planning and doing right now. Why work alone? Make your hard earned investments work for you too for a very comfortable retirement!
