I would like to engage a lawyer for this matter that I’m unsure of.

My mother’s HDB house is fully paid. Dad is still around but no longer staying in Singapore. She wants me to put down my name as a Joint Tenancy. What is in my mind is that If i agree to do so and put my name down as a Joint Tenancy will I still be able to buy a BTO flat with my wife in the future as a first timer?

Afternoon Angelus,

Firstly, will your father be contactable and available when required to sign any legal documents? If he had left the family, was a police report being made?
Secondly, since the unit have being fully paid for, why would you want to be added as co-owner? If the current unit is a subsidized unit, you will be considered as having enjoyed your first subsidized unit once you become the co-owner.
Lastly, with my previous statement, alongside with your plans to obtain a BTO with your future spouse, being a co-owner (unless strictly necessary) would be possible issue.

    Yes my dad is contactable. So what you saying is it would be possible to obtain a BTO being co owner is that right? The reason for the joint tenancy is because mom want to give me the house is the event of her passing. But then I understand that I cannot hold 2 hdb flats under my name. So I'm thinking of putting my son's name who will be 21 in 2 years. Would this be possible.

May I know what is the purpose of putting your name in?

For your case, it's better to get the advice from the authority, HDB itself. It's because how your parents bought the flat (either directly from HDB, with/without CPF housing grant) will also affect your eligibility to get a BTO in the future.
