I’m currently the owner of a condominium with my wife. Can my dad who currently owns a 4-room HDB for decades put my name as an occupant? My mom who’s currently staying with my dad is intending to move in with my brother who is 40 and single. My brother wants to get a 3-room BTO unit.

Hi,

I am not sure the purpose of adding your name as an occupant? If its to form the family nucleus to be eligible to keep the HDB, unfortunately it will not be possible without selling or transferring your condo ownership. HDB will also not allow this as your mum's name will still have be part of the nucleus since your parents are considered one family nucleus entity by HDB. Your brother cannot purchase and apply BTO just with your mum alone, need both parents name to be included. Your brother can apply 2-room BTO at non mature estate on his sole name no issue, or purchase resale HDB (with grants if his income is below 7k) as a single also no issue.

The basic requirement will be for both your parents name to be together in 1 HDB, as they are a married couple, thus the intention that you have on the above description is not feasible.

My Answer with regards to your Question:

- Adding your name as an occupant to your dad's HDB flat won't allow you to keep the flat.

- Both parents' names are needed on the flat's ownership for HDB's family nucleus requirement.

- Your brother can't apply for a BTO unit with just your mom's name; both parents are usually required.

- But your brother can apply for a 2-room BTO or buy a resale HDB flat on his own.

- This scenario might not work according to HDB rules.
