I have enough cash and CPF to buy a 5-room hdb but not enough to buy private property. However, my spouse's name is in his parent's hdb flat. To get his name out, it'll have to be a fresh transaction bet him and his family if they want to keep that flat. Problem is, they come from low-income family and thus is not able to pay his CPF portion or any cash top-ups needed. I feel stuck and extremely frustrated as we have been married for a long time but I do not want to force them to sell the roof above their head. The government is helping everyone except people like me. What can I do, how can I have my voice heard?

Dear madam,

I do empathise with your situation as several of my friends are also in the same situation.

As you have mentioned that you have enough cash and CPF to purchase a 5rm HDB, is this amount a combined sum of your spouse and you or purely individual funds available?

In addition, has your spouse's HDB met the MOP?

By rules and regulations, there is nothing much we can advise, even if you appeal to any government body, I doubt there is nothing much they can do since your spouse's family will be unable to pay his CPF portion.

If they were to sell their HDB, what are the various options for the elderly? Are all of you staying under 1 roof? Will the elderly be able to purchase a smaller unit with the cash proceeds of the existing sale such that they need not worry about servicing the housing loan for smaller unit?
