I have a friend who just got a new flat and she has rented out 2 rooms w/o informing HDB. Just want to know will the HDB find out about this rental even if the owner did not inform them about renting out the room?

Hi Ang,

HDB conducts random check or they could also receive tip off from public. Considering it's a new flat, it's rather easy to spot illegal subletting. You should advise your friend to put a stop to it.

Hi Ang,

A penalty of up to $3,000 will be imposed on those who flout the rule. HDB may compulsorily acquire the flats of flat owners who repeatedly fail to comply with the new requirement.
