I currently own a condo and previously a 5rm hdb. If I were to inherit my parents' flat, is there any fees that I need to pay? Will this affect my chance of applying for another hdb in the future?

You won't face stamp duties or inheritance tax, owning a condo and inheriting an HDB will require you to choose which property to keep, and you will likely need to fulfill certain HDB conditions and wait-out periods to apply for another HDB in the future. Read More

You have to confirm with HDB whether you are eligible to inherit and keep both HDB and condo, as there are certain conditions to fulfill. There are no estate duty or inheritance tax, or stamp duty payable for inherited properties.

Yes since you already own a private property, you already have restrictions in terms of buying HDB next time again, in terms of a longer wait out period. If you plan to buy another HDB next time, you have to sell away all your existing properties.

Hi! If you inherit an HDB flat while owning a condo, a few things can come into play.

Generally, you’re not allowed to retain ownership of both a private property and an HDB flat at the same time. So if you inherit the HDB, you may be required to dispose of your condo within 6 months, unless special exemptions apply.

Also, inheritance may still trigger stamp duties or legal fees, depending on how the transfer is executed and whether it’s through a will, intestacy, or trust.

As for future HDB eligibility — yes, this can affect your ability to apply for a subsidised flat again. You might be considered a second-timer or even ineligible, depending on your past property history and whether you’ve taken any housing grants.

Hi,

1) It is not automatically means you could keep the inherited flat.
2) The conditions that allowed a private property owner to keep the flat are:
(a) The flat must not be a BTO/SBF or a resale flat with grants.
(b) It must be bought before 30 Aug 2010.
(c) The private property owner must physically live in the inherited flat for 5 yrs to fulfill the MOP
3) The private property owner is not allowed to sell the flat on the open market and to rent out the flat without fulfilling the MOP.
4) In another word, once you decided to keep it, you are not allowed to sell it until 5 yrs later.
5) You will only need to pay the legal fee to get the court to issue a letter of administration if no will or a letter of execution if there is a will to complete the inheritance process.
6) This is a fixed cost that cannot be escape even when you decided to sell it after inherited.
7) This inheritance will not affect your chance of applying another HDB as long as you did not utilized the 2 chances of buying subsidized HDB flat.
