I am a Malaysian with an SPR holder. I wanted to purchase a house in Singapore. I do have a property in Malaysia under my name. My son is also an SPR. Understand that being an SPR, I will need to sell off my property overseas to get one here.

Question:
Can I still buy without selling off the property in Malaysia?

If the answer is yes with the requirement for me to sell off the property in Malaysia, can I buy this under my son's name as the main owner and myself as the 2nd owner instead. Will this way can help me to keep my property overseas? (Note that my son is still studying at University in Malaysia yet he is SPR still)

If I still need to sell the property both ways asked as per above, any other options, or what are other options do I have to keep my property in Malaysia while to able to purchase a property in Singapore now?

Hi Malalini,

1) It is only when you planned to buy an HDB flat that has such a requirement for you to dispose of overseas property.
2) If buying private residential there is no such requirement. No count of residential property that will increase your ABSD for overseas property.
3) If you are buying an HDB flat, both you and your son must be SPR at age of at least 21 years old holding SPR status for a minimum of 3 years.
4) You will have to sign an undertaking with the HDB to sell your overseas property within 6 months upon key collection.
5) If you have a good reason to keep your overseas property you may appeal to the HDB now.
6) You may submit your appeal via: hdbresale@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg to get a black and white to protect your interest.

Dear Buyer,
You need not sell your property in Malaysia, if you do not want to. You can still buy a private apartment or condo.

I am currently assisting some Malaysians to buy private property and will be glad to share my expertise with you.
