As this is an uncommon procedure, you may check with HDB directly in regards to this. HDB may grant you an approval to purchase a resale without cancelling your BTO application denpending on yor circumstances and the TOP date of your BTO. Alternatively you may also want to rent a unit under PPHS scheme whare the rental rate is far cheaper than the rental rate at the open market. I'm not sure where you heard it from, but this is not true.

Should you decide to purchase a HDB resale flat, you will have to give up your BTO application. You will also need to serve a 5-year MOP for your resale flat before being able to apply for another BTO flat.
