Hi,

I own a HDB. My husband's parents residing overseas are very old and sick now so we would like to move there to take care of them.
The issue is that we still have 2 years of MOP.
Can we rent our HDB?

Good morning Sir/ Mdm,

you will have to call or email the HDB branch office (that in charge of your unit) to appeal to rent out your HDB within MOP.

Appeal will be based on case by case basis tho.

Good morning Mdm,

Sorry to hear that your parents-in-law are not feeling well and I really applaud both of your filial piety to even leave Singapore to take care of them. Salute to the both of you!

As for your question, you may appeal to HDB for the approval to rent out of your flat before your MOP is fulfilled. From my experience, they may ask you for medical records to show that your parents-in-law are really sick and i think the chances of you getting an approval is high. We do need to note that even if HDB grants you an approval to rent out your place, the MOP will be suspended. This means they will halt the MOP at the point that you rent it out. So when you come back to Singapore to stay in the house, then the MOP will carry on. As you mentioned you still have 2 more years to fulfil your MOP, so if HDB approves and you rent it out, few years later when you are back, you will need to stay for another 2 years to complete the MOP.

I think your question is pretty straightforward and the next question you may probably ask is how do i appeal for the approval. Actually the appeal process is very easy. It is just the sending of an email. What is the crux of the matter is what do we write inside the email. So what I can trouble you is for you to contact me and we can have a chat and I can teach you on what and how to write. What matters will also be what is your future plans after coming back to Singapore. This might also affect what to write in the email. Btw no worries on the chat, there are no obligations at all.
