Hi Guru's,

Actually I have a few questions which I hope someone can advise me.

I'm a Singaporean and my wife is a PR. We got married around 2 years ago. As I'm working overseas most of the year, I ended up buying an apartment there. I do not plan to sell it as I need a place to stay for work. I know this makes it hard to apply for a HDB flat, but I really want to bring my case to HDB and see if I can get an exemption as I want to raise my family in Singapore. My flat overseas is still under construction and it will take at least 2 yrs to complete. I also know about the MOP, that is why I thought maybe it's better to buy a resale rather than a BTO so I have less of a lock down period, i.e, MOP for BTO's only start after construction is over. Also I'll be applying as a first time applicant and also hoping to use the CPF grant as my parents live in a 2 km radius. Would appreciate any advise on the possibility of applying for a HDB flat. Thanks.

Afternoon Nair,

Being assigned overseas to work would means that your company will provide for your accomodation. To purchase a unit for own stay, during assignment, might be tough to justify. However, I do heard of cases where HDb buyers are allowed to keep their private properties that was purchase outside SG and yet purchase a HDB unit.

We can try to write into HDB and see what we can get out from it. HDB might reject you straight out and approve with T&C attached.

Do feel free to contact me if you require my assistance.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply. Well yes I agree that in normal circumstances, the company will provide accommodation. However my line of work is different. I work in the Bollywood Film industry as a freelance Assoc. Director. So most of the time, I am based in India to get jobs. Also my employers keep changing from film to film. And they do not pay for accommodation unless we shoot outside India. For the past 7 years I've been overseas and staying in a rented place. Hence I decided to finally buy my own place. But due to the delays in construction and me getting married, I decided to settle my family in Singapore. That was my wife and kids can be there while I travel for work and have a place there to stay as well. Another question I had was; After the 5 years MOP, I know I am allowed to rent the flat out, but if I were to buy a private property, would I have to sell the flat? Thanks Mike
