After applying and accepting the bank loan, I found out when trying to exercise the option that my ethnic group is not eligible to purchase. Turns out, the seller's agent misunderstood the ethnic quota requirement and have been telling us that all racial groups are eligible when it is not.

Is there anyway I can appeal to HDB to buy the flat? Otherwise, is there a way I can cancel the loan with no penalty since it isn't really our fault.

Hi, yes you could always appeal to HDB but chances will be slim. I would advice that you engage an agent for your next flat in order to prevent such issue arising.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. Even though the Seller's agent is at fault, as a Buyer representing yourself in the purchase, it is also your duty to do your due diligence before you commit to take up the bank loan.

You will likely not be able to proceed with the purchase. As for non-disbursement of bank loan, you may wish to speak to the bank to see if they can grant you any waivers.
