The planning area of Hougang is bordered by Sengkang to the north, Geylang and Serangoon to the south, Bedok to the southeast, Paya Lebar to the east and Bishan and Ang Mo Kio to the West. Thus, Hougang is often known as the 'heartland' of Singapore, even though significantly far away from the Central Region. Today Hougang is the home to approximately about 179.5k residents living in the 54k flats under the management of Housing Development Board. Most residents of Hougang are the previous settlers from the Teochew community at Kampung Puggol who were relocated to Hougang.
