Expected to be completed by mid-2020, the five-storey facility will house a new fire station and a neighbourhood police centre.

In a bid to provide faster responses to emergencies in the rapidly developing town of Punggol, the authorities started the construction of the area’s first fire station on Monday (11 Mar), reported the New Paper.

According to Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and National Development, Sun Xueling, having a nearby fire station in the town is important due to the area’s rapid development, especially after the government announced its plans to establish the 50ha Punggol Digital District.

To be situated at 151 Punggol Central, the fire station will be housed in the same building that will be occupied by the neighbourhood police centre, which will move from its existing address along Tebing Lane.

Expected to be completed by mid-2020, the five-storey facility will house the 23rd fire station of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the 35th neighbourhood police centre of the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

The building will feature eight fire engine bays, two firefighter slides and a 25m training maze. As for its second level, which will be used for community engagement events, it will come with a training room, rooftop garden and multi-purpose hall.

The facility’s ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Sun and Ng Chee Meng, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, who are both MPs for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

There were also about 150 guests from SPF, SCDF and Ministry of Home Affairs, as well as grassroots representatives.
