HDB survey

The 10th HDB Sample Household Survey (SHS) 2013 has revealed some interesting insights about elderly residents.

For instance, 81 percent of seniors prefer to age-in-place, citing reasons such as the comfort of their present flat, emotional attachment and the opportunity to leave the property to their children.

The study also found that 19.1 percent were living with their married children in 2013, while 88.6 percent received visits or visited their married children at least once a month.

Writing on his blog, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said: “We will work harder to cater to such needs. We will also have to do more to familiarise them with the various monetisation options, such as the Lease Buyback Scheme and Silver Housing Bonus.”

He noted that in recent years, the SHS has studied the increasing social diversity among HDB residents.

“We are particularly keen to know if our residents are satisfied with their precincts, are able to live close to their relatives, and are finding the community spirit strong.

“The survey results enable us to better understand our customers’ changing needs and expectations. They provide useful information for our policy reviews and subsequent improvements to town design,” added Mr Khaw.

Done every five years, close to 8,000 HDB households were interviewed from January to August 2013 for the latest survey.
