Former Bottle Tree Park to host nature learning facility

Nature will continue to reign at the former Bottle Tree Park in Yishun, as a community learning facility will be built there.

A local non-profit organisation, Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) unveiled plans for a 26,000 sq m nature-inspired campus named Kampung Kampus (pictured) on 8 November.

The facility aims to be a holistic and experiential campus designed to emit a low carbon footprint, and will feature tropical sustainable architecture, building methods and technologies.

GUI has managed to expand the site by 260 times its original space after more than two years of engagement with various government stakeholders. Located at 91 Lorong Chencharu, Kampung Kampus will retain the kampung atmosphere which the former Bottle Tree Park was well known for.

The organisation revealed the community will be involved in building the campus, through funding and brick-making. This project is expected to cost $6 million, and will be carried out in three phases.

The first phase, costing about $2.8 million, will see the construction of the living heritage centre, multi-purpose hall, an office building, organic vegetable plots and prototyping zone. It is expected to be completed by June 2015.

GUI is a volunteer-driven organisation which aims to help people appreciate the beauty of sustainable living, nurture community creativity and build resilience.
