Shopping mall Jem (pictured) will remain closed until further notice following Wednesday’s collapse of part of a ceiling on the first floor.
More than 240 tenants at the mall are affected by the temporary closure.
On its Facebook page, Jem said it is carrying out further checks and rectification works are already underway.
Meanwhile,
engineers from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA)
inspected the site yesterday and said that a “leak in the water-pipe and
the weight of the water, which collected on the false ceiling, was a
likely cause of the false ceiling collapse”. But they added that the
structural integrity of building was not compromised.
At the same
time, BCA instructed the building’s owner Lend Lease to close the
complex. The mall was also ordered to “get a Professional Engineer to
check all the false ceilings in the mall” and investigate what caused
the collapse.
This isn’t the first time that the mall in Jurong
East has faced controversy. In June, its opening was pushed back a few
days due to a lack of fire permits; and just last month, two separate
fire incidents broke out at one of the mall’s shops and in the carpark.
