More than a week after the collapse of a partial false ceiling at
Jem, the shopping mall remains closed to the public, with rectification
works well underway by the property’s management.
At the same
time, many netizens have shared their views on the incident, with some
of them urging the mall to carry out thorough checks to ensure that the
complex is risk free.
On Jem’s official Facebook page, user
Serene Tham said: “Please open only when it’s 101% safe for consumers.
No point rushing (the) opening (and) risk further incidents.”
Another
user Daniel Ong agreed, saying: “Take your time to do a thorough check
and repair,” adding that the management “needs (to exercise) diligence
and (carry out) proper maintenance work”.
On the other hand, some people can’t wait for the mall to re-open.
Sylvia
Tam wrote on Facebook: “Quick! We miss going to Jem,” while user Audrey
Goh said she’s hoping the mall will open this weekend.
In its
latest update, Jem said: “Rectification works are progressing well (and)
testing is almost complete,” but did not disclose when the mall will
resume operations.
Last Friday, Singapore’s Building and
Construction Authority (BCA) instructed the mall’s development firm,
Lend Lease, to close the premises and ordered them to “get a
Professional Engineer to check all the false ceilings in the mall” and
investigate what caused the collapse.
Over 240 of the mall’s
tenants are affected by the closure, some of whom are in talks to seek
compensation, revealed media reports.
