Beginning April 2015, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) will require industry professionals to submit their structural layout plans using the modern Eurocodes instead of the British standards. Until then, BCA will allow submissions through both codes.
The move is in line with the agency’s goal to improve industry standards by enforcing usage of the Eurocodes – one of the world’s most advanced structural design codes. It comprises a series of 10 standards developed over the last three decades by experts from the European Union (EU).
“In moving from the British Standards to the Eurocodes, we now have a set of building codes that is constantly reviewed at an international platform and regularly updated to suit developments in the building industry,” said Ong See Ho, Commissioner of Building Control at BCA.
All EU member states, as well as Norway, Iceland and Switzerland use the Eurocodes as their mandated building code, while the UK scrapped the British standards in 2010.
“We are one of the first countries outside Europe to introduce Eurocodes as our building code. This will raise the standards and expertise of our building professionals because they will be using a set of building codes widely used by their counterparts in Europe,” Ong added.
