Why do I need to pay stamp duty when I'm renting a room?

CLchu wa limRepliedI have rented other places before and I have never come across this with my previous landlords.
It is part of the government's regulation to do so for all tenancy agreements In Singapore. While not an absolute rule, it is typical market practice for tenants to be responsible for paying that stamp duty on the contract when renting a room.
