I bought a resale 3 room flat under the singles scheme. My partner co owns a DBSS flat with his dad as the main owner and him as the occupier. His dad is a senior citizen, PR, handicapped and unemployed and relies heavily on my partner to pay off their remaining housing. Are we able to get married while each of us still hold our own flats under these circumstances? Are we able to appeal to HDB for this situation?

Hi,

Technically once you guys get married, HDB will require you guys to add the partner's name into one of the flats and choose which HDB you guys plan to keep. You will have to appeal for such special circumstances perhaps based on medical reasons of your partner's dad to see if he can keep the flat on his sole name.

Hope the above clarifies. May I have more info and requirements about your plans so as to make better recommendations? Thanks and look forward to value-add to your housing plans.

We are planning to appeal such circumstances to HDB based on his dad medical conditions to see if this works. Alternatively we was also thinking about making his dad as the sole owner of his flat but however his dad is a PR and as understand PR cannot own a new flat. He bought the DBSS flat 10 years ago with the help of my partner singapore citizenship. If we were to change the sole owner now to his dad, will HDB allow him based on his PR status?

If HDB did approve of making his Dad sole ownership, can my partner help to contribute financially by topping up his dad cpf account as well as bank account since they use partial bank loan to cover the remaining housing costs? They should still have about 15 years of housing left to pay and his Dad is 61 years old this year.
Dear madam,

By default, HDB views married couple as a single entity, where each entity can only own 1 HDB unit. Given this scenario, it is quite likely that 1 of the unit has to be sold. You can definitely appeal but do not have high hopes of being allowed to retain both properties. If both units have already met their MOP, perhaps you may consider upsizing to a bigger unit to have all family members under 1 roof?

Hi,

I would be most glad to assist you further and please feel free to let me know if you need any assistance. Have a good day ahead. By the way, this is a special case and there is reasonable ground to appeal to the HDB and you guys could try to write to them soon.
