Holland Village forms the main crux of District 10, and with the newly-built Holland Village MRT Station, it has become more accessible to local and expatriate visitors alike. Several neighbourhoods also surround Holland Village, like the Holland Village proper that is a crescent-shaped area of shophouses; the Chip Bee Gardens that encompasses several ice cream shops and cafes; and Holland Close which is a large Housing Development Board (HDB) estate. Holland Village is also known as Singapore’s Bohemian enclave due to its myriad of art and craft stalls, art galleries, gift shops, novelty shops, theme party clothing stores, ethnic home décor articles and many other interesting shops.
Another main component of District 10 is Tanglin Road that adopted its name from the house of William Napier, who was a prominent lawyer and newspaper editor in Singapore in the 1800s. Today, Tanglin has been revamped to a lifestyle and education hub, as reflected by various colonial buildings next to Minden Road that have been used as dance studios or childcare centres.
