Moulmein-Kallang MP Denise Phua has pledged to seek higher compensation for Rochor Centre residents set to be evicted in light of the North-South Expressway (NSE) project.
More than 200 residents aired their grievances during the launch of an exhibition of the new flats being offered to them in Kallang.
One of the major complaints was the lack of any dialogue prior to serving the acquisition notice. Some residents also claimed that the new Kallang site is not an ideal location, as it is noisy and there are no elevators for elderly residents.
On the contrary, Ms Phua said the new Kallang site offers amenities such as proximity to the Kallang River and MRT station, as well as elevators on every floor.
“I will speak to (the HDB) and see if it’s possible to increase the compensation to the residents,” said Ms Phua.
“I understand that there are residents who are very angry at having to move. It’s difficult but we have to accept the government’s decision,” Ms Phua added.
