Bedok is named after the Malay word ‘bedoh', a type of slit drum used for calling the common people to attend prayers at the mosque. In fact this type of drum was commonly used by the mosques as late as the 1950s. In the recent years many residential areas have grown up in this prominent Singaporean region. Bedok New Town is a recent development to this region covering an area of about 9.4 km2 It is a hilly region with a calm and quiet locale and features landscaped parks and sports complexes.

The Housing Development Board (HDB) has built about 58,000 units in the residential area of Bedok New Town. Although flats of various configurations are included in this project, most of these flats are either 3-room or 4-room. More than 27,000 units of executive and Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDC) flats can be found in the region. These are homes to around 200,000 residents, making Bedok one of the most sought after places for property investments.
Modern facilities and amenities such as the efficient transportation, quality educational and healthcare institutions can be found within arms reach, thereby making the Bedok HDB Estate very popular among property buyers.
Location Specifics
Bedok HDB Estate is located in the South-Eastern part of the region. Some of the neighboring regions are Bayshore, Upper East Coast Road, Changi and Tanah Merah.
The Bedok Planning area has been divided into 8 sub zones for administrative and development purposes. These sub zones are:

Transportation Network
The location of Bedok HDB Estate facilitates easy transportation to other parts of the nation. All modes of transportation can be accessed from this housing estate.
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is a popular mode of public transportation. There are many MRT stations namely Bedok, Tanah Merah, Expo, Simei, Tampines and Kembangan which can be found near the Bedok region.
Residents of this estate also have access to public bus services that are operated by the Singapore Bus Service (SBS) and Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT). There is a Singapore Bus Service (SBS) Interchange in Bedok. Some of the bus services that travels through Bedok include:
