A complete condo.
I find Makena to be a complete condominium with perfect facilities, spacious outdoors and necessary amenities. My kids just love going around the playground inside the gated community. It is minutes from CBD and Airport. We have great sea view from our unit and unblocked view and privacy. Having lived in some other condos in Singapore, I find this place great to stay for families. -

Spacious and peaceful environment
I am a non-South Asian resident who has been living in the Makena estate for more than 2 years and I have generally found living in the estate peaceful and quiet. There are actually many Singaporean owner occupiers and other non-Indian residents in the development. But I notice the Singaporean Chinese owners tend to drive and do not have much of a communal culture as compared to the Indian expats. They also do not have the culture of letting their kids run around the grounds unlike the expats perhaps because of their kids' heavy tutorial schedules. As a result, their visibility is rather low as the Chinese owners just drive from point A to point B. In any case, thankfully, I never had any problem or run in with the South Asian residents in Makena and I have found them to be very family oriented and appropriately friendly neighbours. I certainly hope it remains that way. I am also an active user of the swimming pool and have never once found the pool to be dirty or infectious. I have never once fallen sick from using the pool. In fact, this is one of the rare few developments with such a large swimming pool. Although the condo is not near any MRT station, I understand that many of the expats find it very convenient to take the SBS buses along the Mountbatten Road to the city centre, which is just a 5 mins walk from the estate. This is a development that provides real value for your rental money. The apartments are spacious with high floor to ceiling height and the rooms are generally squarish in their layouts. There are no bay windows and large balcony areas which are just wasted space in this hot and humid country. -

2013 Nov: Changes yes, but still a disaster!
I have been living in Makena for four years and I have two kids. I see that management is trying harder. But nothing seems to have changed. They made a new fountain in tower 121. It looks better, but constantly leaks. So here's my morning. I try dodge your way out of the building, watching the leaky roof and slippery floor. I reach outside to get a taxi (train station is 1.5 miles. bus stop is more than 500 meters; there is a shuttle but you would have to line up for 20 minutes. it has very few seats and too many people in queue). So i wait for taxi. I can see taxi's hiding here and there, but they wait to be 'on call'. So now i am also trying to call one. Even though i see taxi's waiting with 'busy' sign, i cant get one. Then I see one coming from somewhere and another person running to get it. (Wasnt i the first one in the queue?) But that regularly happens in and around Makena. People cut lines all the time. The building that used to be 50% Indians is probably 80-90% indians. But in terms of visibility, I would say its 100%. People from other nationalities somehow seem to stay in their houses. I would really prefer my kids to mingle with people from all possible countries. But that doesnt seem to be an option in Makena. And dont even get me started on hygiene. I have never seen the pool drained and scrubbed. Yes! once in a while I would notice someone with a machine, trying to clean it. But the proof of water is in testing it. My kids invariable fall sick (sore throat to fever) everytime they take a dip. i get sneezes, everytime. i can go on and on. wish there was a place to upload pictures. I will message again with reent pictures of proof -

Changes happening in Makena
Must say that there are lot of good things happening in Makena over the last 3 months. Lot more responsive council and MA. Lot of changes like a completely upgraded kids playground, new pool chairs, new lights in the pool etc. Hopefully that the condo is changing for the good and hope that the changes are maintained. -

Strict enforcement showed it benefited you
All those who wrote here saying not to go there was trying to prevent potential tenants from going to move there. They want to prevent them from driving up the demands and the rental rates there. Makina's strict rules and enforcements benefited all the residents - be they are residents or tenants. In various comments here, it showed the enforcement and supervision and the fine system have been good as it received pretty good feedbacks to address the littering and cleanliness expected of the estate. So perhaps the 50% of the tenant in Makena should address their cleanliness problems and as well social behavior problem. This was because there was not enough of foreigners that lived in Makena before that before and after, there was no measurement of checks and balances at all. -

Please don't move there
The Makena is not well managed at all. The pool and green spaces are dirty, my kids keep on having water wart since we move there. The playground is not safe anymore for the kids as the flooring is badly damaged with big holes. Unfortunately, nobody is repairing those. Kids could easily twist an ankle in a hole while running and having fun. The place is full of mosquitoes, the baby playground is a nightmare. You can't stay there for more than 10minutes without getting many bites. People living there are throwing dirty things from the windoes such as milk, sanitary towels .... After two years, I am glad to finally move out ! -

Its still a nice condo
It's a nice place with big pool and good facilities. Stayed for a year with a friend. Half Indian tenants here and I understand that there is an even bigger Indian community further down at Tanjong Rhu condos. My Indian friends are moving there,over to Waterside and Costa Rhu where its like 80% strong Indian community. They are moving there partly becos the management in Makena is very strict about kids playing football & cricket on the ground & skating & cycling near the pool area. Tanjong Rhu has its own great amenities too, ... But to be fair, overall its good for couples and tenants who love the SUN! Tanning by the pool and BBQ parties cos the estate is not well shaded, there is plenty of sun all throughout the estate ground, unlike other condos that are very shaded with plenty of trees. Other estates have buildings are linked thus not hot to walk around in the day. -

Horrible, avoid
The condo is one of the worst I ever stayed. Facilities are old and nobody manages. People staying there are either rude, inconsiderate and lifeless. -

terrible!
My family and I have lived at the Makena for four years and this is the worst this condo has ever been. Many residents have no experience of being outside their home country and behave with appalling consideration for others with regard to their habits (spitting, urinating on grass, rude and aggressive children). The management committee have now initiated a fine system for anyone who breaks the rules such as playing football on the grass or riding a skateboard. However in the last two months the management have informed me they have yet to fine anyone ($50 for first offence and $100 for second offence) - there is little point in having a management company that cannot deal with confrontation and start a policy that they do not enforce! The focus is on stopping children playing rather than stopping the dogs urinating and defecating on the communal grass areas where babies roam with their helpers or parents. When an issue arises the security officers are not interested and are happy to walk away from a problem. No one wants to get involved. Before moving to the Makena I would seriously consider other condos - certainly we have seen it go downhill (most notably in the last six months) and will not be renewing our lease when it is up for renewal. Another point to mention is the restrictions on tennis coaching and swimming lessons (Tues and Thurs eves) does not allow for those people who work full time and are not available on either of those days due to work commitments, although in my contract I am entitled to use the tennis court twice a week. Surely if I choose to spend my permitted allowance being instructed then that is my choice? Up to you if you move here but there are many unhappy and frustrated residents! ;o( -

Great place.. if you can bear with management
Most striking is the pool, which is large and appealing. The management can be a pain, if you are unlucky. They recently issued notice to prosecute any parent, whose children play ball in the ground. No bicycles/tricycles/scooter/ball/skate etc.. Restrictions on coaching are frustrating at times...especially for those who dont know swimmming/tennis. This place is very popular with Indian expats (more than 75% of tenants). Walk to ECP. It is good that there is a minimart,cafe, beauty parlour. But the security is lax, as anybody can get into the condo (feels like HDB estate sometimes, as you do not get the exclusive feeling). Any person/car can come in and out anytime, the guards do not stop most of the time(unlike Mandarin Gardens etc). Most visitors are outside customers for the minimart/cafe/doc/beauty parlour. Good part of having many visitors is that It is generally easy to get taxi outside. It might be more effective to stay in one of the nearby condos and use the facilities of this condo like minimart/cafe/doc/beauty parlour. There you might get more secure and exclusive feeling. -
