Contractors and homeowners must comply with safety requirements to minimise the spread of Covid-19 if they want to resume renovation works, says National Development Minister Lawrence Wong, reported TODAY.
“I appreciate that many contractors are very eager to resume work. I also appreciate that many individuals are eager for their contractors to resume work on renovation projects,” he said at a press conference held by the multi-ministry task force handling the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We want these works to resume as fast as possible but we need to ensure the requirements are met and done safely.”
TODAY had reported that many contractors and sub-contractors handling home renovation projects are facing various difficulties in resuming work considering the new guidelines set by the government.
These include successfully submitting application forms, applying for an online training course as well as having workers tested for Covid-19.

Wong explained that all of these are “very new requirements” for contractors and for the government to put in place and regulate.
And although there are “quite a few” guidelines, these are necessary and Wong called on all parties involved to work through these new requirements systematically and patiently.
According to him, the government will work with contractors on these requirements since they are on the ground and could come up with innovative ideas that achieve the same outcomes.
“We will also listen to their feedback and work through their processes to make sure construction work resumes safely,” said Wong.
