Refined Living: Northern inspiration

8 Jul 2016

Many Singaporeans favour interior design that feature modern Asian or European influences. But if you’d prefer something different, it’s worth considering Moroccan-style décor. These homes by Fatema Design Studio show how you can bring some North African flavour to your home.

Start small and subtle
Elaborate, intricate patterns in eye-catching colours are characteristic of Moroccan interior design. Incorporating them into certain sections of your floor tiles and contrasting them against solid-coloured tiles in light shades will brighten up your living space without being visually overwhelming. You can further beautify your home with Moroccan ceiling lamps in vivid hues.

2 Get off the ground
Floor tiles are not the only place for pretty patterns. Creating a sort of “frame” on a wall using the same patterns not only helps to reinforce the Moroccan theme, but can also be reminiscent of the rounded doorway arches common in Moroccan and Moorish architecture.

Cook in style
The contrast of darker tiles against light-coloured surfaces prevents the kitchen from looking nondescript and monotonous, while the continuation of the pattern seen in the living and dining areas strings the theme together and helps to liven up an otherwise plain stovetop.

4 Dress up your home
If you prefer something a little less subtle, you can work with plain walls and floors, letting your furniture do the talking. Large, exquisite rugs on the floor and intricately designed tablecloths make it easy to turn your living room into a Moroccan-inspired haven. Arched doorways add an extra touch of Moroccan décor.

Make bold choices
If you want to make a lasting impression on your guests, your home’s entrance is vital. If you have a long hallway, make full use of it. Make visitors feel as if they are actually in a Moroccan abode by using Moroccan-style floor tiles that lead to an arch.

6 Mix it up
Lighting and furniture play key roles in your home’s interior design. A little warm lighting helps create a welcoming, relaxing ambience, and a variety of lighting types (ceiling, table wall and floor lamps) is advised. As for furniture, a combination of dark wooden chairs and tables and plush, light-coloured sofas go well together.
