English elegance

Contributor 24 Jun 2016

While modern, minimalistic interior design is popular here, there is no denying the old-world charm of English-inspired décor. We’re not talking about Singapore’s British colonial architecture, but styles that hark back to the Edwardian, Victorian and even Tudor eras, as seen in these four condos.

Twin Waterfalls

Intricately carved wooden cabinets line the walls of this Punggol condo’s living room, whose high ceilings are perfect for the Tudor-era theme of its décor. This theme is most evident in the living room’s centrepiece, a stunning, sturdy leather sofa complemented by a large carpet and Tudor-style coffee table. Resplendent floor-to-ceiling dark red curtains complete the look.

While the interior of this Bedok apartment is relatively modern, it does contain subtle Edwardian-type elements, such as a vintage weathered clock face and decorative telephone in the living room. Similarly, the bedroom is adorned with such understated touches, including a hat and coat stand and old-fashioned furniture reminiscent of a bygone era.

Light-coloured walls, complete with wainscoting, stand out against dark wood flooring and give this home a distinct Victorian feel. The most interesting feature of the living and dining areas (apart from the fireplace) is undoubtedly the furniture: a Victorian-style sofa and dining chairs in light materials and muted colours lend a blend of tradition and modernity to the décor.

The least traditional of the lot, this condo incorporates aspects of English country home interiors, with a strong focus on wood. The contrast of light- and dark-coloured brick walls makes the environment more visually alluring, and together with the wood flooring, evoke the ambience of an English cottage.
