The increasing popularity of mixed-use developments in growing cities such as Singapore is a logical solution to high-density living, said Cheng Hsing Yao, Chief Executive Officer of GuocoLand (Singapore).

In recent years as the population of Asian cities started to grow, transportation issues also became a major concern. As a result, the growth of mixed developments is inevitable, media reports noted.  

For instance, GuocoLand is developing Tanjong Pagar Centre (pictured), a 290-metre development that is set to become Singapore’s tallest building.

Set for completion in 2016, the 1.7 million sq ft integrated project will comprise a 38-storey Grade A office block, retail units, a luxury business hotel and apartments.

Cheng noted that by integrating residential, office and retail components into one development, residents will cut their travel time significantly when going to work, shopping or using recreational facilities. Additionally, nearby amenities will help them become more accustomed to public transport networks that contribute to a well-planned city.
