A 128-page book on a previous land dispute that Singapore had with Malaysia was launched by Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs K Shanmugam yesterday.
Titled ‘Malaysia & Singapore: The Land Reclamation Case – From Dispute To Settlement’, the book focuses on details of past reclamation projects at Tuas, Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong which Malaysia claimed had damaged the environment, affected the livelihood of fishermen and caused navigation problems.
The dispute was brought to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (Itlos) in 2003, opening a larger issue on conflicting legal rights. Singapore was standing for its right to reclaim part of its territorial sea for national needs while Malaysia defended the right to protect its maritime environment.
The case was later resolved after a group of international experts explained that the reclamation did not cause major environmental damage.
