Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently studying plans to build subterranean roads, media reports said.
The roads will link the new downtown Marina Bay, the central business district and the future southern waterfront district beyond 2030.
Aside from traffic moving unobtrusively below, the extensive road network will also improve the liveability of urban areas and free up space above ground. Such roads can be seen in global cities like Stockholm, Brussels, Paris, Madrid, Boston and Hamburg.
The plan, which dates back to the 1980s, is part of a bigger initiative to accommodate the city-state’s rising population.
