Asked by
I'm Singaporean and my husband is a foreigner (considering to apply PR). We have a son who is a Singaporean.
We are considering to buy a property here as we are quite sick of rental and also we would like to ensure our child has a place to stay should we pass on/for the future.

I'm not working and my husband is the sole breadwinner. We cannot buy a brand new HDB or EC due to his income. So we are stuck with option of Condos or resale HDB.

Before we had our child, we stay in a 1700sqft condo. After our child is born, we move to a cluster house (current place) of about 5000sqft.

We are frustrated with the size of new properties and felt that the price of resale condos do not justify. We are also considering to buy an overseas property for our retirement. We are both in our mid 40s so loan tenure is also a limitation for us.

We felt that we can't seem to wait any longer due to our age. At the same time, we felt the prices here are super expensive and it would not justify putting our eggs in one basket (considering we want to live overseas later).

So we are stuck in a dilemma, should we buy a resale hdb or a resale condo or a condo? We cannot seem to get our heads around it and don't know what we should consider, the pros n cons etc.

Please advise how we should organise our thoughts and get through this so that we can own a property here and leaving it for our son. Thank you.

Hi,

1) Seems like you already decided to buy a resale HDB flat from the info provided.
2) There are restrictions on the HDB when come to inheritance. Your child must be married or reached 35 yrs old before he can keep it as his own when you decided to retire or after passing on.
3) You will have to adjust your plan slightly which is using the sale proceeds of the flat to help your son's purchase later on, rather than leave it to him.
4) Alternative you could look for EC that had reached MOP which is considered cheaper than a private condo on the same lease year.
5) If the above is insufficient to straighten your thought. It is best to have a face-to-face discussion. There is too much unknown information to share on the pros and cons of each alternative.
